Of course Manchester United would have preferred for Marcus Rashford to be returning to something like his best at Old Trafford rather than at Camp Nou. But the fact of the matter is that was never going to happen.

It would be remiss to suggest - as some pundits have - that Ruben Amorim was the problem. Rashford had suffered dips in form and been embroiled in disciplinary sagas before Amorim had stepped foot in the Old Trafford dugout, and the head coach was right to ship him out in the summer.

United needed to move on and Rashford needed to move on.

Rashford will never play for United again, that much is clear. And the onus is on the club and the player to make sure a permanent move away is secured next summer.
