(CNN) – Many federal workers will have to start pinching their pennies a little tighter.

Friday marks the first time these employees won’t be getting a full paycheck because of the shutdown.

Since the stalemate started on Oct. 1, close to one 1.5 million civilian federal workers were either furloughed or forced to work without pay.

Hundreds of these employees were seen lining up at a food bank event this past week in Washington, D.C.

On Thursday, Senate Democrats blocked a Republican bill that would pay people who are considered essential workers.

Democrats said they want the bill to cover furloughed employees too.

However, lawmakers on both sides said they feel a bipartisan agreement could soon be reached.
