MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A West Memphis man has been sentenced to a little more than eight years in federal prison after he was arrested for a 2023 shooting.
According to the West Memphis Police Department, 21-year-old Jaylen Atkins was sentenced to 103 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to a 2024 federal indictment. The sentencing was held on Wednesday.
Atkins was the suspect in a December 2023 shooting that injured one man and left a child "shot multiple times." According to West Memphis Police, witnesses described the gunfire as "rapid".
Investigators reportedly found video evidence revealing that the gun used in the shooting was modified with an illegal switch. Switches allow guns to work as automatic weapons.
