NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) — Newark International Airport is currently experiencing delays of up to 11 hours due to staffing issues, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Ground delays began just after 5 p.m. on Sunday, according to the alert on the FAA website.

The average delay for flights at Newark is currently just over two hours, with the longest delay at 11 hours and 16 minutes.

Delays and cancellations could worsen in the coming days due to the government shutdown, creating staffing shortages in air traffic control, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
