When Mets manager Carlos Mendoza’s coaching staff was blown up once their epic 2025 collapse from first place to missing the playoffs was complete, assistant pitching coach Desi Druschel was considered a favorite for a promotion.

Less than a month later, there’s been a surprising turn of events.

Instead of succeeding Jeremy Hefner as Mets pitching coach, Druschel is returning to the Yankees to resume his old role as an assistant pitching coach on Aaron Boone’s staff 11 months after moving from the Bronx to Queens .

ESPN first reported Druschel’s switch on Sunday night.

Druschel was given permission to interview by the Mets to interview for positions outside their organization, presumably after informing him that they planned to go in another direction when settling on a new pit
