The Rockford-area tennis standouts who made it to the IHSA girls state tennis tournament all bowed out before the medal rounds, but several qualifiers won matches, including a pair of freshmen.
Freeport's Angelina Sala, who became a sectional champ less than a week ago, tore into her first IHSA state tourney. She won 6-3, 6-1 in her first match, but then fell 6-1, 6-1 in her second match as she started to have trouble with her foot. Because of a bad shoe, she thinks, she eventually lost two of her toenails, and she also eventually had to injury default out of her third match, which dropped her out of the tourney.
