Peak dental bodies have slammed fluoride conspiracy theorists after a local council announced it would be removed from its water supply.
The Gympie Regional Council last month revealed it would be taking the advice of a local’s petition by defluoridating drinking water, claiming it would save about $250,000 a year.
But the decision came after a concerted effort from groups online urging Gympie residents to contact councilors with claims the chemical causes cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer’s Disease and “reduced IQ”.
The Australian Dentists Association (ADA) say the decision is “short sighted” and plays into the fear-mongering shared by conspiracy theorists .
“It is just gobsmackingly awful. It’s a very poor decision, for the health of Queenslanders,” ADA spokesperson, Dr Michael Foley
