Supreme Court Chief Justice Bhushan R Gavai on Monday recommended to the central government that Senior Judge Justice Surya Kant be made his successor. His name has been sent to the Union Law Ministry for approval. With this, the process of appointing the 53rd CJI in the Supreme Court has begun.

It is a tradition that the incumbent CJI recommends the name of his successor only when requested to do so by the Law Ministry. The term of the current CJI Gavai is ending on November 23.

After him, Justice Surya Kant will take oath as CJI on November 24. He will retire on February 9, 2027. His tenure will be approximately 14 months.
