The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday said middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer sustained an ‘impact injury’ to his left lower rib cage while taking a catch during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. Subsequent scans revealed a laceration injury to his spleen.
During the match, Iyer pulled off a stunning diving catch while running from backward point to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. However, he landed awkwardly on his elbows and ribs, mainly on his left side. After completing the catch, he was seen writhing in pain, clutching his ribs, before being helped off the field by the medical staff.
