Nearly 600,000 Hoosiers will go without Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits in November barring a sudden restoration of funding as the government shutdown drags on.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture told Indiana there were insufficient funds to provide November benefits because of the shutdown in a letter Oct. 10. The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration is not authorized to distribute benefits, it told IndyStar Oct. 21. It's unclear if FSSA has the authority to fund the program itself, or if the federal government plans to provide emergency assistance.
