The Republic of Ireland elected independent candidate Catherine Connolly to be the tenth Irish President over the weekend in a landslide victory. Connolly, a long-time member of parliament who considers herself a socialist and a pacifist as well as a pro-Palestine activist, was backed by a coalition of left-wing parties, bucking the rightward shift of many national elections in Europe and Asia.
While the position of President is largely symbolic in Irish politics – with real political power held by the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) – the election had drawn attention from right-wing observers all over the world, including from Trump supporters in the United States, because of recent anti-immigrant protests from nativist activists in Dublin.
