DETROIT, MI — The historic Mariners’ Church of Detroit will mark the 50-year anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking with a multi-day commemoration featuring its annual Great Lakes memorial service.
On Sunday, Nov. 9, the church will host an 11 a.m. memorial service to commemorate the 29 crewmen lost when the freighter vanished on Nov. 10, 1975 in a violent Lake Superior storm. It also honors all sailors who have died on the Great Lakes.
“There’s nothing to celebrate about the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” said Rev. Todd Meyer. “But there is every reason to commemorate the event, honor the lives lost and remember all the brave men and women who continue to serve on the Great Lakes.”
