Indian ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer suffered a freak injury on his internal rib cage during the third match of the bilateral series against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25.

Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in the city and the team’s medical doctor is supervising his progress alongside him. Initially, the right-handed batter was poised to return to the country following the conclusion of the ODIs.

Iyer was recently elevated to the role of vice-captaincy in ODIs, which is his strongest format. He has taken a break from red-ball cricket owing to a persistent back issue, and is struggling to break into the T20I setup in the current scheme of things. That limits his appearances at the international stage to a large extent, since ODIs are played far and few in between
