The Alberta government tabled legislation on Monday that could have teachers and students back in classrooms as early as Wednesday.

The Back to School Act would also legislate the terms of the agreement proposed by the province in September, including a 12 per cent salary increase over four years and the hiring of 3,000 new teachers and 1,500 educational assistants.

In a statement released Monday, Premier Danielle Smith said the bill is a result of the impasse between the province and the Alberta Teachers’ Association.
