WEST VIRGINIA (WVNS) - With no clear end in sight to the shutdown of the federal government, families across the nation have prepared for disruptions to assistance programs.
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children - often referred to as "WIC" - is a nationwide assistance program serving pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as children under age five.
The program is one of several for which funding could be discontinued at the close of the month. The disruption could impact millions nationwide, along with thousands of mothers and children in West Virginia alone. "More than 30,000 mothers depend on WIC every year and it accounts for supporting about 70% of the babies that are born within the state," said Century Foundation Chief of Policy Programs,
