TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA)— Extremely dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Melissa slowly approaches Jamaica and will bring catastrophic winds, flash flooding, and storm surge, the National Hurricane Center announced.
Located about 115 miles west-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, Melissa is moving toward the north-northeast at about 3 mph.
According to the NHC, a turn toward the northeast with an increase in forward speed is expected today, followed by a faster northeastward motion on Wednesday and Thursday.
Melissa is expected to move over Jamaica today, across southeastern Cuba Wednesday morning, and across the southeastern or central Bahamas later Wednesday.
Maximum sustained winds are 175 mph.
