STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In a national first, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that 51 public schools will be in direct contact with 911 in the event of an active shooter via a new Emergency Alert System.

The Emergency Alert System, also known as EAS, will “have direct 911 integration,” meaning that “[t]he school-activated EAS bypasses the 911 call flow straight to real-time dispatch.”

The faculty and students in the schools selected for this pilot program will witness “audible and visual indicators” that 911 has been alerted, a written statement detailed.

Of the 51 schools chosen for the EAS, they are in 25 buildings spread across the five boroughs. As a result, there will be five school buildings per borough that will be EAS participants.
