Donald Trump has praised Scott Bessent and said he is thinking of appointing him as the next Chairman of the Federal Reserve.

However, the U.S. President added he did not think his Secretary of the Treasury would want the job of replacing Jerome Powell as Fed chair next year . Powell's term ends in May 2026.

"I'm thinking about him for the Fed," Trump told business leaders during a speech in Japan. However, he added: "But he won't take the job, he likes being at the Treasury."

Heaping praise on Bessent, Trump said: "How good is he on television? He soothes the markets—I don't soothe the markets; I sometimes disturb the markets."
