The city of Portland escalated its enforcement of laws against blocking sidewalks near the federal immigration facility over the weekend, directing police officers to ensure the immediate removal of protesters’ tent and supplies after months of leaving that work to the city’s regular camp clearance program.

Mayor Keith Wilson said Monday that he and the city’s police agency made that change because conditions at the protesters’ supply camp outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement compound south of downtown — and the confrontations and violence Wilson says they spurred — rose to a new level in the latter half of last week.
