The Board of Control for Cricket in India has revealed that star batter Shreyas Iyer suffered a ‘blunt’ injury to his abdomen, which resulted in a laceration of his spleen alongside internal bleeding, on Saturday, October 25, during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney.

Iyer injured his lower left rib cage while diving for a hard running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. Though he walked off with the physio’s help, his condition worsened later as his vitals dropped, leading to immediate hospitalisation.

Subsequent tests revealed internal bleeding caused by a laceration in the spleen, after which he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for close monitoring.
