NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) -- Testimony is expected to begin on Tuesday in the civil trial involving Abigail Zwerner, a former Newport News elementary school teacher who was shot by her 6-year-old student while in the classroom.
The seven jurors and two alternates for the trial were selected late Monday, and are expected to hear evidence in the Jan. 6, 2023 shooting at Richneck Elementary School.
The $40 million negligence lawsuit alleges that then assistant principal, Ebony Parker, ignored warnings that the 6-year-old had a gun on the day of the shooting. The first grader fired one shot, which went through Zwerner's hand and into her chest.
