MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WSFA ) - More than 750,000 Alabamians, roughly 15% of the state’s population, could soon face severe food insecurity as federal SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) funds are projected to run out . Local food banks are already preparing for a significant increase in demand, anticipating a potential food crisis.

Michael Coleman, CEO of the Heart of Alabama Food Bank, shared the urgent preparations underway.

“We’re doing everything we can to think ahead and to be proactive and to anticipate what may come,” Coleman stated. His organization currently serves over 260,000 people, with about half of them not receiving any SNAP support, highlighting an existing need exacerbated by economic pressures.
