AKRON, Ohio – County Executive Ilene Shapiro and Summit County Council on Monday approved emergency legislation that will grant $250,000 to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank to help residents affected by the potential loss of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
More than 77,000 Summit County residents rely on SNAP, which provides approximately $15 million per month in food assistance in Summit County, according to a county news release.
As of Tuesday, Congress has not passed a federal budget or allocated funding to permit the program to continue. According to a notice from the U.S. Department of Agriculture , there won’t be enough funds to pay full November SNAP benefits for approximately 42 million individuals nationwide beginning Nov. 1.
