So much had to happen for Dodgers pitcher Will Klein to even end up on the World Series roster. And yet, he found himself at the center of a scenario he admittedly never would have been able to conjure up in a dream.
That's baseball for you.
The Dodgers reliever started the season in the minor leagues, bounced around between Seattle's and Los Angeles' Triple-A affiliates after being DFA'd. He eventually made 14 appearances with the Dodgers with a 2.35 ERA. Still, he wasn't on the postseason roster until the World Series. And that only happened due to Tanner Scott's injury, Alex Vesia's departure for family reasons and, of course, Shohei Ohtani's presence opening an extra pitcher spot on the roster.
So, what happened on Monday? In the midst of a marathon Game 3 of the World Series, Klein was called on to carry the weight for Dodgers' thinned-out pitching staff. And he delivered four scoreless innings of one-hit baseball and five strikeouts.
When Freddie Freeman ultimately ended the game on his walk-off home run in the 18th inning, the Dodgers centered their celebration around Klein.
Asked about that moment, Klein gave the coolest reflection. He said it was something out of a dream — actually exceeding his wildest of expectations.
Ohtani and Freeman both had huge moments on Monday night, but Game 3 will be remembered as the "Will Klein Game."
How can you not be romantic about baseball?
