President Donald Trump threatened to send "more than the National Guard" to combat crime in U.S. cities as his efforts to send troops into places like Chicago has faced roadblocks.

Speaking during a recent trip to Japan, Trump told attendees at the U.S. naval base in Yokosuka “we’re sending in our National Guard and if we need more than the National Guard, we’ll send more than the National Guard because we’re going to have safe cities."

“We’re not going to have people killed in our cities. Whether people like that or not, that’s what we’re doing," he said.

The president did not specify what he meant by "more than the National Guard" and did not name particular cities, though his comment came just after he spoke about Chicago.
