Federal, state and territory police chiefs have urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to consider federal tax and superannuation changes to help overcome a looming exodus of police officers who are considering quitting due to psychological burnout.

In a letter sent to Albanese last week, police commissioners jointly pushed for legislation to establish a nationally consistent framework to improve retention and wellbeing across the nation's police forces.

"It is recognised that the increasingly demanding nature of modern policing is placing significant physical and psychological strain on officers," the letter written by ANZPAA chair and Tasmanian Police Commissioner Donna Adams said.
