As the federal government shutdown drags on, impacted families across the country are getting hit in their pocket books, as well as their kitchen cupboards. And with delays to the Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program (SNAP) disbursement of funds set to begin Nov. 1, food banks in Texas are bracing for a surge in need.
"This shutdown is a reminder of how close many families are to facing hunger,” said said Celia Cole, CEO of Feeding Texas, the state association of food banks, in a news release. “One missed paycheck can mean an empty fridge. Meanwhile, SNAP is a lifeline for millions of Texans, and that lifeline may be paused for the foreseeable future."
