KINGSTON, N.Y. — Former Kingston High baseball star Zack Short has entered the free agent market and hopes to land a spot with another major-league baseball team before the start of the 2026 season.

Short, 30, made his intentions known to the Freeman in an interview on Monday, Oct. 27, after he played in the second annual Swan Pro-Am with longtime friend Andrew DeForest, the head pro at the Swan Country Club in Saugerties, where the pro-am took place.

Short’s decision comes after spending a year in the Houston Astros’ organization. After starting the season on the Astros’ Triple-A franchise in Sugar Land, Texas, Short was promoted to the big-league club on July 2 when starting shortstop Jeremy Pena suffered a fractured rib on June 27.
