JAMAICA, — East St. Louis native and two-time Olympic medalist Dawn Harper-Nelson is bracing for the impact of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica. The storm has already broken numerous records before making landfall as a Category 5 storm, the highest possible category for a hurricane.
Melissa is expected to devastate the island nation as it has pounded the area with strong winds, storm surge and heavy rain for several days, with another 24 hours or so to go.
Dawn and her husband, Alonzo Nelson, have since shared their unplanned and unwanted adventure with the world on Facebook and in interviews with national news outlets.
