HARRISBURG — Calling the imminent stoppage of federal SNAP benefits a food emergency, state Senate Democrats on Tuesday introduced a plan to pull $62 million in interest from the state Rainy Day Fund to quickly boost supplies at food banks.
Allegheny County Sens. Lindsey Williams and Jay Costa were among senators in the Capitol who announced the proposed legislation and called on Republicans who control the chamber to move the bill rapidly. Effective Saturday, federal SNAP benefits accessed by two million Pennsylvania residents are scheduled to end and new SNAP requirements will begin.
“These changes are going to make people hungry,” said Democratic Sen. Art Haywood of Montgomery County. “It’s hard to be in a more outrageous position than to be holding up the food for our neighbors.”
