A Sioux Falls family has lost contact with loved ones in Jamaica.

As of late morning Oct. 28, Hurricane Melissa made landfall on the southern coast as one of the strongest recorded hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin.

By 11 a.m. CST Oct. 28, JF Jensen said he lost all communication from his mom, Dawn Jensen, who has been on vacation in Montego Bay since mid-week last week.

Two hours later, he was able to receive a text confirming she was still safe, but there is no internet connection, he said.

“It’s scary, the unknown of what is going to happen,” said JF’s sister, Liz Soost. “If and when communication will no longer be there or how long it will be down. Everything goes through your mind.”
