WEST SPRINGFIELD — Great Scott!

Fans going to see the 40th anniversary screening of “Back to the Future” this week at Cinemark West Springfield will certainly feel like they’ve stepped through a time machine, thanks to a DeLorean parked outside of the theater’s entrance.

The DeLorean, a 1981 model complete with gull-wing doors, is owned by Springfield resident Mark Varteresian. He purchased it from its previous owner in Maryland.

“It’s not a Ferrari. You don’t keep it just to store it and look at it,” Varteresian, who is a member of the online group North East Region DeLoreans , said in an interview with The Republican.

There are three DeLorean owners in the Springfield area, Varteresian said. Only about 9,000 DeLorean DMC-12 units were produced, all between 1981 and 1983.
