EDENTON, N.C. (WITN) - As the nation prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence next July 4, WITN continues to highlight the places and people who helped shape America’s story.

This month, we travel to Edenton — a quiet coastal town in eastern North Carolina — where a group of women made history long before they had the right to vote.

At the heart of downtown sits the Barker House, once home to Penelope Barker, a woman who dared to speak when few others could.

“Penelope Barker and fifty women in Edenton decided to protest the fact that taxes were unfairly added to tea and other goods,” said Patti Mordecai, director of marketing and community events at the Barker House.
