Gov. Kathy Hochul recently signed legislation aimed at increasing the number of lifesaving organ transplants across the state.
The HEART Act repeals a ban on allowing patients to register at multiple transplant centers at the same time. It would also protect those on Medicaid from being skipped over because of their insurance status.
Officials say this will decrease the amount of time patients wait on the list, and will improve patient outcomes.
About 450 New Yorkers die each year waiting for an organ transplant, according to state data.
Aisha Tator, executive director of Donate Life New York, joined "The Rush Hour" to talk about about the importance of the legislation, and signing up to be an organ donor.
