AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The line for food assistance locally has grown over the last few weeks as the federal government shutdown reaches 28 days, with many local federal workers missing paychecks and SNAP benefits at risk as early as Nov. 1.

But as that continues, volunteers at local churches are giving their time and resources to feed even those who are usually financially stable on their own.

For many years, Eric Mongillo’s perspective on food drives was different until he visited one for help.

“There comes a point we’ve got to just kind of be a little humble about, eat a little humble pie,” said Mongillo, director of Broad Street Ministries. “You had to do what you had to do, support your family. And that’s just something you have to come to reality with.”
