As funding for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program looks to run dry, Toledo City Council is stepping in.
The federal government is in its 28th day of the shutdown, and benefits for food assistance programs like SNAP will not be issued as of Nov. 1, according SNAPs website.
In a special meeting Tuesday, the Toledo City Council unanimously approved an expenditure of $50,000 from the general fund for the SeaGate Food Bank of Northwest Ohio for emergency food services.
“Unfortunately the shutdown has led to a moment in history where we are going to deny 71,000 Lucas Countians, 31,000 children access to food in our community,” Councilman Nick Komives said. “I’m really proud of this council for stepping up to the plate to do something about it.”
