COLUMBIA — South Carolina Democrats got their second candidate for governor when state Rep. Jermaine Johnson entered the race Oct. 28.
Johnson said he is undaunted in the faces of dominating GOP control of state government, telling a crowd of supporters inside the Statehouse there are too many pockets of South Carolina that have been left behind.
“That’s what this campaign is going to be about,” he told the 100 people assembled. “Being together, being united.”
He added “South Carolina is a beautiful state … but too many of our communities are hurting.”
Johnson was first elected to the S.C. House of Representatives in 2020, unseating a 20-year incumbent. He represents the Lower Richland/Hopkins area, near Congaree National Park outside Columbia.
