The Cherokee Nation declared a food emergency today as the federal shutdown continues, impacting its citizens' access to food assistance.
Tribal leaders announced they are utilizing over $6.7 million in emergency relief funding to support eligible SNAP recipients who will face a suspension of benefits starting November 1.
Direct payments of approximately $185 per individual will be made to impacted Cherokee Nation citizens to help alleviate the financial strain.
In addition to direct payments, the tribe is prepared to extend its WIC program for another month, ensuring continued nutritional support for women, infants, and children.
