The first grizzly bear has been killed under a provincial program to cull problem animals.

The animal was shot by a hunter following an attack on livestock, apparently in southwest Alberta, though provincial officials didn’t provide a date or place.

It occurred under an initiative announced last year in which qualified hunters who have signed on to a list are then called on by provincial authorities to deal with bears that have proven problematic with humans or ranch animals.

“To date, four grizzly responders have been called out to address grizzly conflicts, with only one grizzly bear being lethally removed,” Alberta Forestry and Parks spokesman Mike Plentis said in an email Tuesday.
