New police plan prioritizes continued efforts to cut shootings, serious traffic crashes

Salem police want to see fewer people dying in shootings and car crashes.

The Salem Police Department lists violence reduction as one of its top priorities for the next two years in its recently completed strategic plan. The plan also identifies heightened traffic safety work, community trust and employee retention as other high priorities.

Department leaders presented their plan for 2025-27 to the Salem City Council Monday. The plan, drawing on previous community feedback and internal meetings, identifies initiatives and safety issues the department aims to address in the near future.
