ANN ARBOR, MI — A new map being made public for the first time shows the extent of blatant racism written into Washtenaw County property records in the 1900s.

Thousands of properties from Ann Arbor to Ypsilanti and beyond — even the land on which Michigan Stadium sits — still have restrictions against Black residents or other racial, ethnic and religious groups on the books.

They’re just no longer legally enforceable.

They’re now shown on an interactive online map created by the Justice InDeed community collaborative started by Michael Steinberg, director of the Civil Rights Litigation Initiative at the University of Michigan Law School.
