FRITCH, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — In the Spring of 2024, across the Panhandle, historic wildfires could be seen, even in the small city of Fritch. Fritch Volunteer Fire Department Chief Zeb Smith fought these fires right alongside his men.

"I remember the main thing he was talking about when all the volunteers from other towns came in," said Joe Smith, father of Zeb Smith. "He said that I get to rest more now than before they showed up because I can go home and rest, and all the volunteers are here taking care of my town."

Lisa Smith, mother of Zeb Smith, said even after that point, she believes her son was still being a hard worker and would only rest for a little bit and would be right back at supporting his community.
