MEMPHIS, Tenn. - In a matter of days, tens of thousands of Shelby County families will run out of the money they need to put food on the table. The federal government says SNAP benefits won't be paid Saturday because of the ongoing shutdown. That will impact around 150,000 people in Shelby County.

But some people have been forced to go without their benefits before. FOX13 spoke to Renatta Miller in March 2024 after she had her benefits stolen by crooks in New York. She spent days without her benefits.

"I had to just manage with what I had," the mother of four told FOX13.

After her benefits were stolen, Miller said she relied on food pantries to feed her children. At times, she said, they had to skip meals.
