CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - One eastern Iowa doctor is closely watching Hurricane Melissa’s path for personal reasons. Dr. Vincent Reid says Jamaica has seen a handful of hurricanes in his lifetime, but Melissa is among the strongest ever.

With a chunk of the country enveloped by the hurricane, he said he’s trying to do what he can to help.

“There’s a certain feeling of helplessness,” Reid said.

Reid was born and raised in Jamaica and has family and friends currently bunkered up as Hurricane Melissa batters the island.

“Loss of property, loss of lives, of course loss of lives being most important, and any kind of long-term impact it’s gonna have on the island. The kind of humanitarian suffering that it could cause, I think that is the kind of impact that we’re looking at,” Reid said.
