The powerful Hurricane Melissa is forecast to bring “catastrophic and life-threatening” flash flooding and landslides in Jamaica and Haiti, according to the National Hurricane Center. The most dangerous impacts are likely through Tuesday, Oct. 28 in Jamaica and through midweek in Haiti. Heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of Cuba, the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Jamaica’s airports, including Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, were closed as the Category 5 storm made its way through the country.
Airlines are offering travel waivers for passengers whose plans will be disrupted by the storm. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport does not have nonstop service to Jamaica, but American Airlines offers connections.
