WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump understands he can’t serve another term as president and is only joking when he talks about running in 2028, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson (Republican, Louisana).
“It’s been a great run, but I think the president knows – and he and I have talked about – the constrictions of the Constitution,” Johnson told reporters Tuesday.
The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt had been elected to four terms, forbids presidents from serving more than two.
Trump has repeatedly talked about serving another term and likes to show off “Trump 2028” hats. He most recently discussed the prospect on Monday.
