The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is facing strong pushback after its Department of Electronic Systems Engineering (ESE) introduced a new attendance and parking policy this month. The changes apply to faculty, staff and students and aim to regulate time on campus more strictly. Inside the campus, however, the move has prompted protests and deep concern among scholars.
Under the policy, faculty and staff must record 40 working hours each week.
For students, the requirement is far higher: MTech and first-year PhD scholars are required to spend at least 50 hours on campus each week.
Senior PhD researchers are expected to match their supervisors’ hours, often reaching 70-80 hours weekly.
