Hurricane Melissa hit Cuba early Wednesday morning after slamming Jamaica Tuesday afternoon. It made landfall in the city of Chivirico in the Cuban province of Santiago de Cuba with sustained winds of 120 mph.
Melissa made landfall in southwestern Jamaica near New Hope with estimated maximum sustained winds of 185 mph and an estimated minimum central pressure of 892 mb, the National Hurricane Center said.
It was one of the strongest storms in the Atlantic Basin ever recorded.

At 11 a.m., the eye of Hurricane Melissa was located about 150 south of the central Bahamas, moving northeast at 14 mph.
The system has moved offshore of east Cuba, the NHC said.
Winds are at 100 mph with a minimum central pressure of 974 mb.
