SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - A family in Illinois says a scammer in Greene County conned them out of thousands of dollars. The elaborate scheme involved a family member jailed by federal immigration authorities.
“As soon as I heard my brother’s voice, over the phone, telling me I’m coming home. That to me was all of the reassurance I needed to know that it had to be legitimate,” said Rosa Chavez.
Her brother, Luis, was taken to the Greene County Jail this month from Illinois, where he’s being held for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, or ICE. She says that’s when a man, posing as a federal judge, called him with an offer that seemed too good to be true.
