HEBRON, Ky. —

Before dawn on Tuesday, 88 veterans and their guardians boarded a flight to Washington, D.C., as part of an Honor Flight, a program designed to celebrate and reflect on their service.

Jack Kindell, a sailor and proud Navy man who served during the Vietnam War, described the parts of the trip he was anticipating: "Arlington, the Marine Memorial, the changing of the guard, the Vietnam War, which is going to be tough for a lot of us." Advertisement

At this point, many of the Honor Flights are for Vietnam veterans, as the number of World War II and Korean War veterans continues to decline.

The trip offers a moment of celebration for their sacrifices and a chance for reflection, which can be overwhelming.
